WIFTI 2012 SHOWCASE


 Get Ready for International Women’s Day March 8th 2013        

 Chapters - Please announce at your 2012 Showcase screening:

 “Women in Film and Television International Board of Directors sincerely hope you enjoy the 2012 Women’s Short Film Showcase you are about to watch. We are so proud of our Member Chapters across the globe and made this DVD available to your Chapter for tonight’s event. All of the films submitted to our Producer, Janet Davidson, were stellar caliber and the decision did not come easily! We hope you leave here smiling, crying, laughing and thinking about what these filmmakers had to say. 

It doesn’t stop there, we want to see your films coming to us for the 2013 Short Film Showcase. 

We hope you leave the theatre inspired to shoot that film you’ve always wanted to make or eager to submit a film that you recently completed!  Once again WIFTI will be accepting two films from every eligible Chapter across the globe. Our selection committee and Showcase Producer will be choosing one film to represent each Chapter in the 2013 Showcase.” 

SUBMISSION DETAILS: 

Eligible films will have a completion date after 2010. They should be under 15 minutes in length and should highlight the work of Women in two of the following categories; Director, Producer, Actor, Writer, Director of Photography, Animator, and/or Editor. First preference will be given to film submissions Directed by Women.  We encourage submissions featuring strong female characters and stories about women.  

Each Chapter should set their own deadline for local submissions providing your Chapter enough time to judge and send final selections to WIFTI’s 2013 Showcase Producer. These selections must be sent to our Showcase Producer by October 15, 2012.

2012 Short Film Showcase 

In 1911, the United Nations put forth a day to celebrate the economic, political, and social achievements of Women past, present, and future. In countries such as China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, International Women’s Day is a National Holiday. This marks the 7th year WIFTI joins in that celebration with our Short Film Showcase. These films have been selected by the participating WIFTI Chapters from submissions created by their members.  Each Chapter’s selections were sent to the WIFTI screening committee to compile the final 2012 Showcase Program. The films were all truly wonderful and WIFTI congratulates all the filmmakers on their efforts.  We hope this inspires you to make your own film for next year’s celebration.

Real Men Go Hunting/ 15 minutes

Director: Ryan Lynch

Film Synopsis: Ryan gives us a humorous look at the male’s need to hang on to preconceived notions about his gender and what he “should” do in life.

Director Bio: Ryan grew up on a farm outside of Atlanta, GA. After traveling the world and documenting her journeys, she settled in the Bay Area where she currently works for Pixar. She is working on another short film, “The Farms”, and is producing her first feature film, “White Rabbit”.

Menisus / 8 minutes

Director/Producer: Maria-Elena Doyle

Film Synopsis:  “Menisus” is an experimental journey into human nature where we learn what some would say our souls already know: The Spirit is more powerful than the flesh.

Director Bio: Maria-Elena’s love for art came from her time in Dublin, Ireland where she studied Visual Communications. Moving to New Zealand she has married her love of art and story into her short films. She is currently working on a new short film “Inorganic”. 

Sack Lunch / 6 minutes

Film Synopsis: Revenge is best served in a sack lunch!

Director Bio: Jacqueline resides in Portland. “Sack Lunch” is her first film. This is part of a series of shorts on revenge that will be arranged in a feature length film. She serves on the Board of WIFP.

Film Synopsis:  So often we recreate our pasts and our present becomes the nightmare of our childhood. This story revolves around a woman who carries the burden of her disturbed past throughout her adult life.

Directors Bio: Archana is a graduate of the Directing Program for Films and TV of UCLA Extension. “Green Bangles” is one of her first films.

This film is in Hindi, subtitled in English 

Red Flag / 11 minutes

Director/Writer: Sheila Curran Dennin

Film Synopsis: We all get warning signs when something is not right, but do we also give them off to others as well!

Director Bio: Sheila is an award winning writer/director whose passion is centered in public health/family issues. This film is born out of personal experience in the dating world.  During her 20 year career she has produced a serious body of work, and in her words “this film marks a much-needed fore into dramatic comedy. Phew!!”. 

AWOL/12 minutes

Director/Writer: Deb Shoval

Chapter: Women in Film Los Angeles, Ca. USA                              www.wif.org

Film Synopsis: Disappointment in love can send someone “AWOL” in the heart. The front lines are the only defense.

Director Bio: Deb has won many awards and competitions, but currently she can be found on her organic vegetable farm in PA as she works on her first feature film project “Poppies and Olives”.

Director/Writer: Megan Wennberg

Chapter: Women in Film & TV Atlantic Provinces, Canada          www.WIFT-AT.com

Film synopsis: A daughter’s long time rage at her father’s life choices finally comes to light as she wants to take his ashes back home with her.

Director Bio: Megan was a sculptor, photographer and journalist before becoming a filmmaker. She has won many awards for her short films and is currently working on her first feature length film “Crooks & Nannies”. 

Dance Of The Little Old Men/ 5 minutes

Director/Writer: Kulchera Matson

Chapter: Women in Film & TV Vancouver, Canada                        www.womeninfilm.ca        

Film synopsis: Under the guise of a traditional Mexican folk dance, a border town cowboy is unknowingly robbed of his treasure by traveling banditos. 

Director Bio: Kulchera has been a stay-at-home mom and now is moving towards her passion for filmmaking. She and her sister, Kesa, have big plans to co-produce films bringing the female perspective to light. “Peace, Love, and Garlic” will be Kulchera’s first feature length film. 

The Cake / 9 minutes

Director/Writer: Ester Richardson

Film synopsis: Mrs. Anderson is a stubborn woman who cannot let go of the past, even in the face of desperate pleas for her help.

Director Bio: Ester’s background is theatre directing and this is her first film! It is already gaining acclaim and we look forward to what she will accomplish next.

Film synopsis: Is a Lobster more than dinner?

Director Bio: Joycelyn grew up in the “industry”. Her first short film, “Baby Monitor”, received many awards.  “Lobster” is her second short film. She directed the premiere of Eve Ensler’s newest play, “I Am An Emotional Creature-The Secret Life of Girls”.  Her career spans many sides of filmmaking as well as writing children’s books.
